Employer Notice

How much notice should I give to my employer before leaving for school in August?
It is an accounting/finance gig, business valuation specifically, at a large firm. I work on a team of 10ish people spread across three states, however I only work with one other person directly in my office. I am wondering about weighing the benefits of keeping my leaving quiet (mainly them not letting me go and me continuing to earn my money) vs. being nice to my boss and letting them try to find someone new (as I do a lotta the work over there).
Further complicating the situation is that my boss is on vacation for the last two weeks of my time there. So, I can't really give two weeks notice as that'd be the day that they go on vacation and I'd never see him/her again.
I also have good relationships with the people there and they like me... so they'd definitely write me good recommendations, etc. if I don't act like an ass in leaving.
Thoughts?

So it's just you and your boss in your physical office? If so, I would just give a month's notice. That way your boss will have a full two weeks to find someone new and it won't fuck up his/her vacation. Would you be able to train your replacement and shit while your boss is gone, too?

Yes it is just the two of us in the office. Yes I could theoretically train my replacement while boss is gone, but its a relatively specialized position and they move slow so its highly unlikely that they would fill the position in the two weeks between my giving notice and boss leaving for vacation.
You think a month? I was thinking 3 weeks. Give boss one week of grace period before vacation. Not sure if that seems too short, but I am definitely trying to lean on the watch-my-back personal side. Like they say, the job won't love you back. If they were needing to cut people, I'm sure they wouldn't think twice about letting me go, so I'm not trying to play too nice with them. But I def want that recommendation........

Gotcha. Well you know your boss/company better than I do. If you're pretty sure they might try and replace you ASAP if you let them know too early I'd say you're justified with the 3 weeks plan. I mean at the end of the day 2 weeks notice is the standard and you're going beyond that - meaning you'd be justified, professionally speaking, with 2 weeks. If they end up asking where you're going and you tell them lawl school though, they will prob know that you've known you were leaving for a while. That's why I was thinking a month might put you more on their good side.

Give as much notice as possible without getting yourself shitcanned before you planned to leave. If they move slowly it sounds like a couple months wouldn't be that bad, but don't give them that much time if it's money out of your pocket.

Thanks guys, I was basically looking for someone to confirm that that 3 weeks plan wasn't totally rude on my part and it sounds like its not so thats good enough for me!! Maybe I give them a month... we shall see.

I gave 6 months. Notified my work before I started applying and also once I got an offer that was over my threshold to leave work to pursue.
It's worked out well, everyone has been really supportive and my work load has actually decreased as they are moving others into roles where I was a team leader.
