Apologies if this is an obtuse question, but would it be terribly ill-advised to email a school I'm already accepted to to inquire about their rankings drop? Or any school for that matter? I don't mean I would word it in an aggressive way; I'm honestly curious as to their justification for the drop.
Or would that only be even fleetingly tolerable in the event I was trying to leverage such a drop for a raise in scholarship money?

No. And if you're thinking about changing schools because their rankings dropped, you should retake

"Dear Law School,

Random people across the nation find you less appealing than some other schools. Also, your somewhat unpredictable matriculation of certain students last cycle caused your LSAT/GPA medians to drop. Both of these factors (along with others) have caused your completely arbitrary USNWR ranking to drop this term. I think you should give me more money before I laugh myself out of your queue.

Well, if schools like BU can write emails about how they are now a top-20 ranked school, it seems fair game. I would phrase it as: Can I be forwarded the most recent employment data, because I'm worried of the trend in rankings.

I imagine the school is going to reply with something like:

"yada yada this is an abnormal year. see our past rankings and how fabulous they are. we are taking every step necessary to ensure that by the time you graduate we have exceeded all expectations. yada yada"

I think it's tacky to phrase it like that. Curious as to "their justification?" They didn't come out with the (largely arbitrary) rankings, so they don't have a justification. The rankings are based on a whole host of statistical data, such as LSAT/GPA scores, yield, acceptance percentage, job data, etc and is relative to other schools. Hopefully you've already looked at the data - and if you haven't - why not? If you have - what other info are you expecting to get? I can tell you what you're gonna get - some PR bullshit - nothing useful. Look at the data.
