Do many students struggle in law school? Can anything be done to help someone who is struggling?

Struggling with what?
As in the material or with like, life.
E: if you are referring to life, contact the dean of students if something is going on outside of law school that is preventing you from being able to study, and do this sooner rather than later. They can't do much but at least at my school they offered to move exams back, record lectures, and provide for late drops.

Do people stop studying and caring about academic performance after first year? What do second and third year students focus on if not grades and academics?

Some people do; it depends on what you want to do after law school. Some fields don't hire until during 3L/after graduation.
