6 months of paternity leave seems pretty excessive in any situation

Not if you can actually get someone to give it to you.

That is what my firm gives. I'm a senior associate, I am entitled to it. Women at my firm take the full six months. Why can't I? The only issue is with me likely quitting once I am done with paternity leave.

i guess if its available then its all up to you. ive worked with a lot of male associates who have scheduled 1 month off, usually 1 week before/3 weeks after the birth, but they usually end up working again after week 2. probably has a lot to do with the work environment though

Because women have the babies and breastfeed. You gonna do that during your six months off?

Significant paternity leave is actually really important for women's equality—forming that bond early on allows the father to take a more active role in parenting later on.

Absolutely.

But this guy's "women do it so why can't I" attitude is really off-putting. Taking care of an infant is hard work. There is a reason why those guys who got 1 month of paternity leave went back to work after 2 weeks: working at a job is easier than taking care of an infant.

I'd say do it. The only repercussion might be burning some bridges. If you are okay with that, then why not? Especially, if you will actually be spending time with your child and helping your wife.

I don't find it off-putting. I feel like you're complaining about the wrong thing.

Assuming this isn't flame, it's pretty amazing that a firm offers 6 months. Until a few years ago Quinn Emanuel had that lulzy 3 day paternity leave policy.

It would be wrong not to, imo.

You'll likely burn bridges with your firm. If you don't care about that, go right ahead. But if care about your relationship with your firm (and you probably should care if you plan to continue working as a lawyer), then I would plan to put in at least six additional months after the paternity leave is over.

This.

My firm offers significant paternity leave but few actually take it. However, I think there would be little in the way of ramifications (beyond setting your career back those six months or a year) if you took the time but came back. Taking the time and then just leaving is probably gonna upset some people.

Who says this dad isn't going to be taking care of the infant?
