Internship helpful later on?

I'm starting law school in the fall I've previously graduated from undergrad.
I've been offered an internship as an assistant to a senator in my state, and though it sounds like an amazing job, the position is completely unpaid and will interfere with my plans to go to admitted students' weekends, as well as other plans.
Some people are telling me that I'd be crazy not to take this internship, as it might open a lot of doors later on, helping me land better internships during law school, and other sentiments.
I'm skeptical about its impact.

Is the alternative just bumming around until the fall? Or do you have a paid position to take otherwise? It's not going to have much relevance, but it's better than having a gap for several months on your resume.

I have a paid job now, so there's no resume gap.

Oh. Is working in or around the leg in this state/being a local politician possibly in your long-term plan?
If so, maybe? And if so, why law school? If not, no way.

SPeaking of resume gap, I am leaving my job soon so I can travel for a few months and play chess competitively. Would this gap look suspect to the law school or future employers? I am heading to law school in the fall as well.
