Is owning a cat too much responsibility for a 1L?

I'm thinking about getting one after I move out.

I'm pretty sure a cat can survive with zero attention for at least a week. If you're looking for a low maintenance pet, get a fish.

Yes. Best part of that opening sentence.

I had a cat before, during and after law school (and still do). I thought it was fine, but it was kind of a hassle during summers when I had to find temporary housing that would allow me to bring the cat. IMO though, more than worth it, if you take good care of it.

No? You'll need to feed it once a day and scoop its poop up every other day. That's it.

If it's a kitten, it's going to get into everything, so you'll need to spend a little more time squirt bottle training. If you'll be living alone, consider getting two cats instead of one. It will take you almost no more work, and then they won't get bored as they have someone to play with, so they won't pester you as much, if that's what you're worried about.

Totally worth any work though.

Maybe I'm heartless, but I truly don't understand why anyone would want to subject themselves to YEARS of extra responsibility (and money) by owning an animal. I could see it if you have a stable life, but the cost/benefit never seemed worth it to me

I don't see why it's relevant to the question, but out of my parents' house.

I think you should be OK. I work full time and have two kittens. They're alone (together) +/- 10 hours a day and it hasn't caused any issues. Just be prepared to give them a lot of attention when you are home.

As another person mentioned, if you are going to get a kitten, you might as well get two--they do really well in pairs and then there is less guilt about leaving them. If you're getting kittens, though, I'd recommend getting them at least a few weeks before school starts so you have time to bond with them.

If you don't have a lot of time, I'd recommend adopting an older cat (or two) whose temperament meshes with what you want.

So...go for it! Life is exponentially better with cats :)

FTFY.

In all seriousness, I know for stress purposes, pets can take the edge off. Cats require very little attention, someone I knew even trained their cat to use the toilet (actually, not flushing of course)

I'm not even sure if this is a serious question. How hard do you think your 1L year is? Do you think that it will entirely consume your life? Practicing law is much more consuming. Will you be asking whether you chould have kids or have a life in general once you start practicing? Don't become a lawyer if you don't think you can handle 1L and owning a cat.

Getting a cat is the worst thing you can do for your health and overall personality. This has nothing to do with law school, although you will become an even worse person than you already are if you get one during law school.

Cats will try and murder you while you sleep. But it's not like your life ends when law school begins. As long as you can defend your soul from their evil grip, you'll be fine.

You could also serve as a "Foster Parent" for a cat or two. Providing a temporary home until a permanent one is found

Cat foster parents are an oxymoron since they should all be put down.

Not even close.

OP, cats are incredibly easy to take care of. The only difficulty, as others have mentioned, is that you need to find a pet-friendly building each time you move, so that's something to think about.

OP: cats are np. Get two sibling kittens.

Basically the only training they need is to not scratch furniture.

Cats aren't easy to take care of because the adversely affect your health and shiftiness as a human being.
