my question is lets say you dont make biglaw upon graduation, but do well in midlaw or something. would you have a reasonable shot at a big law position? or do you really just land those big law associate jobs upon graduation

Seems like it would be tough. If you don't have years and years of experience, what will you have to show that you can make your sales pitch with. It's unlikely you'll be able to take full credit for most of the stuff you work on. Eventually, you can get yourself a few million dollars in business, and start calling almost anyone, but that usually takes some serious time, and luck, and effort.
I have wondered, though, if young hot-shot prosecutors and defenders get picked up after demonstrating that they are fantastic trial lawyers. This is an area where I would think you can shine as an individual earlier in your career if you are really great.
