Seat Deposits

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but whatevs.

How are school deposits generally handled? I ask b/c NU says they need a deposit by 4/30 to keep my spot and I'm not certain if I will have a decision about a school made by then. I still have yet to hear from the bulk of the schools I have applied to, have yet to attempt to negotiate schollys, and may not even have time to visit some schools until summer.

Given that, I guess I have two questions. 1) are these deadlines firm, and is it normal/acceptable to ask for extensions? 2) How bad would it be to renege on a seat deposit, besides (obviously) not getting the money back? I envision a scenario where I am still deciding between two schools and place deposits on both until I have time to visit, or do whatever else is needed for my decision.

1) Yes, you can ask for an extension

2) There is no consequence to not attending a school other than losing your money

As a general rule, this is correct. However, you should read what you sign/click. A notable exception is Berkeley, which requires, in lieu of cash, a firm commitment of attendance. It is probably best not to start your law school career with dishonesty/breach.
