Top Law Schools

I have seen on here over and over that it is purely a numbers game unless you are looking at YHS. So does undergrad reputation matter. Specifically will being from a no-name, non-flagship state school hurt my chances?

It will not affect your law school admission. This is the least of your worries. It will affect your hirability and class rank (which also affects hirability a great deal).

The reputation of your undergrad will not affect your class rank. How well you did in undergrad might, but not the reputation.

I'd qualify it as a soft factor, just like any other. URM/GPA/LSAT are your first and most important cut. Going to an unknown state university will have certain drawbacks, but severely impacting your law school admissions is not one of them.

We have discussed the correlative impact of SAT/LSAT and how it impacts prestigious UG's packing the classes of prestigious law schools time and time over. Elite private colleges are consistently over-represented at law schools like HYSCC, but the degree to which that is just because their student bodies are stronger test takers and score higher on the LSAT is routinely scrutinized in any of the other easily locate-able threads

I'm glad you incorrectly put a period at the end of the sentence, because this isn't a question, it's a fact. HYP kids will, on average, outperform folks with identical numbers. Unranked online-school kids will, on average, underperform against people with similar numbers.

Incidentally, some other things matter too! Examples include being an Olympic medal winner, military officer, or having a PhD.

It's a positive or negative soft, just like anything else, so I wouldn't say it doesn't matter. But it's not really a big deal. HYP will get a little "boost" to their GPA, and maybe some of the most highly-regarded others will too. But it depends on what school you're applying to. Columbia, for example, appears to place some weight on it, whereas UVA really doesn't.

Sorry about beating that poor dead horse.

I was having a hard time finding a thread about state schools that were not flagships for the state through the search function. I did not know whether or not that would make a difference. Glad to know that it will make next to none.

I think I've heard sometimes on here that UG prestige can matter for OCI. Can anyone elaborate on whether that's true?

Maybe for like top top firms. It can probably be a tie breaker. However, if your lucky enough to get an interview with them thats unlikely to matter.

I can only see this being relevant if the interviewer went to the same UG. It will show up on your resume: a bruin will like a bruin, a trojan a trojan, big red flocks to more big red, crimson goes with crimson, ect. This would apply to all walks of life and in all careers -- better UG will open up opportunities regardless, so its not worth discussing or including as a variable inthat context.

From talking to people about the interview preselects that came out yesterday, there's a HUGE disparity between people who went to no-name schools and people who went to good schools.
