What books/materials are worth investing in before law school for law school?

I know there's a lot of discussion about Getting to Maybe and all...but should I buy a Black's Law Dictionary now (or do most people just use the online version)? A Bluebook? The E&Es or certain hornbooks (not to read them now necessarily...just because no matter what, I'll probably need them)?

While I do like Kalvano's suggestion, as I think you can learn some secrets on the art of warfare while being entertained, if you truly want to get an edge on your competition without doing substantive prep, you should probably pick up a copy of this, especially if you don't want to fork over $40 for Bunch of Thoughts:

I mean, you could get Harry Potter if you want, it's kind of a classic, but I'm just not sure how helpful it is. I'm assuming OP's goal here it to kill a couple of birds with one stone. If you just want to relax with a good book that's one thing, but how about something a little more interactive:

Law school is all about grades and grades all come down to the final exam and a large component of performing well on the exam is issue spotting.

Just get a quality commercial outline for each of your courses once you're at school, and take a look at this site's guides to doing well in law school. The "before law school" books really have to be read after you've been in classes and had some exposure to really get anything out of them.

Serious answer:

Buy GTM if you want, I'd recommend it. If you only want to buy E&Es because you figure you will need them, don't. You can buy them used (probably depending on school) when the semester starts, and you will know then what supplements you want to buy anyways compared to just guessing now.

The whipper-snappers on Law Review this past year swore by the online version of the bluebook, so there's that.

Otherwise, I'd get a couple of sex manuals, a bartender's bible, and spend what you save on supplements on cocaine. The library has all the treatises and study guides you need anyhow.
