For Money or Passion - Motivation to Attend Law School?
Which would you rate higher as the biggest/bigger factor for you wanting to go to law school?
Money has traditionally been a huge one for many people (despite the statistics we all know nowadays about lack of jobs and scarce high-paying ones).
Passion/Love just refers to your deep interest in the field.
In this poll, you can only choose one or the other - despite possibly wanting to go for both. I'm just asking which one you'd rate higher.

I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but I find these topics kind of fascinating.
Plus, they do relate to law school, decisions to attend, considerations to make, etc.
But, out of respect for others, I shall cease with posting such content on a regular/abnormally high basis!

My love would be not having to do anything at all and still having a liveable salary. If I got 30k a year, I would literally be happy to never work ever.

There's a great discussion of people feeling "unfulfilled" by the law in this thread:
http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... &start=325
It really calls into question just how much people might be giving up if they're going to law school heavily weighted towards the money side and they turn out disliking or not being inspired by the real practice of law. It seems people even getting SAs and good salaries just have an empty feeling about the law.

I think perhaps a compelling question would be, for those who chose love: what is your plan to build a career that incorporates your values?

Safe withdrawal rate is 4% (though that's for retirees who expect to live off the $ for another 20-30 years), so to set this up for yourself you'd need roughly $750,000. You can do it!!! Never mind those pesky issues of inflation, family, cyclical markets, etc.sinfiery wrote:If I hate being a lawyer, I may try to set this life up for myself by like 30.Tom Joad wrote:My love would be not having to do anything at all and still having a liveable salary. Don't forget Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian bonds. They're a cornerstone of any self-respecting aggressive investor's portfolio.sinfiery wrote:I ain't playing it safe. However your brain works, you need to reprogram it. You always ask such dumb "philosophical" questions about thoughts and feelings. Who cares? Nobody. Just do something with your life. It's this special snowflake stuff that convinces people to go to 4th tiers. Being a law student isn't special. Being a lawyer isn't special. Being a partner in a major firm isn't special. It's a job.scifiguy wrote:Which would you rate higher as the biggest/bigger factor for you wanting to go to law school?

I guess it depends on the person.bananapeanutbutter wrote: However your brain works, you need to reprogram it. You always ask such dumb "philosophical" questions about thoughts and feelings. Who cares? Nobody. Just do something with your life.
Some people don't care as much about certain thread topics, so they skip them (e.g., a thread on what type of laptop to bring to law school or a thread on what the legal economy is like in Alabama, etc.). I skip 99.9% of threads here, as does probably everyone else.
I think the concern I've been more understanding of, though, is not making so many separate threads. I agree with that for a variety of reasons. But, in terms of topics of discussion, I don't see any problem generally with being able to discuss topics such as the ones I've posted.
Hmmm, what did you mean above? My OP (or others?) suggest a special-snowflake mindset? This part I wasn't clear on.bananapeanutbutter wrote: It's this special snowflake stuff that convinces people to go to 4th tiers. Being a law student isn't special. Being a lawyer isn't special.
