LSDAS GPA is 3.7, but Degree GPA is 3.36

Post by Poo-T » Thu Jan 31, 2013 10:31 am

I've asked this question before but I am still not confident and would like some more opinions.

In my transcript report my overall GPA is a 3.7. I'm really happy about that but I don't know how my much lower Degree GPA will affect the decision process.

How can your LSDAS GPA be higher than your actual transcript GPA?

I went to community college for two years (3.9), then transferred to Uni (3.36). It averaged out to a 3.7

So where is the 3.36 coming from? Are you talking about your gpa for just your chosen major classes?

Grats man! I went to a CC first and it worked against me. I had a 3.2 overall gpa (3.8 IGETC GPA) and 3.6 at Uni over all I got stuck with this shit 3.13 GPA thanks to a couple of Fs (one in PE!). Curse my youth!

Congrats man! Awesome GPA :) I just transferred from a community college with a 3.9 to a Uni this past year...Is this usually what happens? Will the 2 ultimately be averaged?

They will take into account every single class you've ever taken during/before your first bachelors degree is awarded.

They will treat you more along the lines of a 3.4 than a 3.7. Sure, for USNWR they get to report the 3.7, but for gauging your academic ability to succeed in law school, that 3.36 seems more representative. Sorry to bear bad news, but if I were you I would not get my hopes up using mylsn/LSP based off of a 3.7 in selecting the schools you apply to without giving careful thought to your "back-up" schools given your 3.4

THIS was the answer I anticipated, and it obviously makes sense. I just hope I'm lucky ;_;

On a brighter note, if you can nail the LSAT and get a 172, you're an auto-admit at NYU so no one would ever look into your package to see the inner workings of your GPA.

I have a 159 from Oct, and a 170 from Dec.

What do you think my chances are at Duke given these numbers?

Alas, I don't see Duke happening. 170/3.7 are at/below medians, and its a small enough class size with a low acceptance rate that would indicate someone actually looking at each app, especially those that are not 75th percentiles

Honestly, re-take the LSAT. NYU is well within your reach if you can squeeze out a 172.

what the heck is going on here?

a 170/3.7 will probably get into Duke. If your LSDAS GPA is 3.7 that's all schools care about. If you think you can get a 172 you should retake.

Thanks, but I've sent my applications (one to NYU too). I'm just gonna go ahead and make this my year, come what may. Luckily Wake Forest is close by and they'll gladly take my numbers (I think)

Suralin, I welcome your thoughts on the section you highlighted. I'm too dense to understand your meaning with :?

Just that the only thing that matters for law school admission is LSDAS GPA. Stop worrying about the degree GPA. Also, going to Wake Forest instead of waiting a year and retaking is a foolish decision in the vast majority of circumstances. You don't HAVE to go to law school this year.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
