If a person wanted to work in a smaller type of law firm doing work relating to families and kids or issues like personal bankruptcy or wills and estates, are those types of jobs and law firms hard to get into?

I know that biglaw, midlaw, and government work are very hard to get. But what about these types of law jobs?

Secondly, what is the pay like for them and long-term career prospects?

This is such a general and vague question that it is impossible to answer. Give us much more information. Someone top 30% at SLS will not have a hard time getting a job in a smaller firm that focuses on those areas most likely, but someone bottom 30% at a T4 probably would.
