Top Law Schools

Texas Wesleyan is my 2nd choice since I am wanting to stay in the DFW area.

Is anyone currently attending there that could speak positively about this school? Job prospects, generosity in financial aid, and some insight into the PT program?

Also, do they accept applicants even if they applied later in the cycle and do pay close attention to the personal statement?

Does anyone know if Texas Wesleyan averages LSAT scores? Or do they take the highest one for scholarships/admission?

Youre not going to find positivity about Tex Wes on TLS.

I've noticed. My first choice is SMU but I took the February LSAT so not sure what my chances are for this cycle. Tex Wes is definitely my second choice.

Retake. Wait a year.

If not retake, then consider UH or Baylor as your lowest realistic options for TX.

Trust us. We are trying to do you a favor. Hopefully SMU lets you in this year or next though.

There is no reason whatsoever to go to Wesleyan. If that is your only option, then don't go to law school. It's a terrible school with piss-poor job prospects. If you want Dallas and don't get into SMU, either go to Baylor (shudder) or Texas Tech. Do not, under any circumstances, even consider attending Texas Wesleyan. Ever. Not ever. Do not. No. Do not want.

Note - I am assuming that, for either GPA or LSAT reasons, UT is out.

Also, is it true that if awarded a scholarship at SMU it's easier to keep it? Tx Wes has a requirement that you have to be within the top quarter of your class I believe.

I'm not too happy about my LSAT. I was expecting a higher number. I'm thinking of retaking and applying early next cycle. This year I took the Feb LSAT.

Will SMU accept a June LSAT so late in the game? I've heard it's a possibility for WL'd applicants but I'm not sure if I could email SMU to have them wait on a June LSAT.

Just retake and reapply.

Yes. SMU's stip is MUCH better.

Please heed my warning about predatory stipulations like top quartile....

Im a 1L. I worked WAY harder than atleast 90% of my classmates last semester. I believe i was very efficient with my time. In undergrad if I worked this hard and smart I would have gotten a 4.0.

But im sitting right above median with a 3.4, in the fight of my life this semster to stay in the top half.

Betting on being in the top quartile is a bad bet. You probably wont be. Assume you will lose your scholarship if that is the stipulation, because no matter how smart you are, or how hard you work, you will very likely be somewhere around median.

Also, if you get some no stip offers, you may be able to use them to negotiate the stips off other offers.

The numbers are not good. You're looking at $163k in debt/expense if you pay sticker, for just over a 1 in 3 chance of actually getting a legal job

Rest assured that the true odds are actually far worse. Less than 20% responded to requests for information about employment and salary.

I've noticed that as well. I got a Tx Wes brochure and they were proud of their $40k legal job salaries. After doing consulting all these years, I'll be damned if I make that salary once again. LOL.

SMU seemed alot more realistic in their numbers. I'm not expecting to make $200k a year, but I would like to surpass at least my current salary so I can pay off some of this potential debt.

Tx Wes and SMU are pretty much my only options at this point. I'm stuck in the DFW area.

Usually if someone is dead-set on a school, I will just try and answer their questions because I figure they have done their homework and decided that the school, for whatever reason, is the school for them.

Texas Wesleyan is an objectively terrible school and if you're set on that, don't go to law school. Employers in Fort Worth would rather go to Tech, which is not close, than go to Wesleyan to recruit. Wesleyan will almost certainly ruin your life. That is not hyperbole. Do not go. I cannot stress that enough.

Top 25% stipulation is terrible, and a joke. SMU's is "good standing" which I believe is a 2.0. Almost no one loses their scholarship. If I were looking for a job coming from Texas Wesleyan, I would be targeting Starbucks or running off to an island somewhere to escape the loan debt. No joke at all.

If you want Dallas, go to UT. If UT isn't an option, then go to SMU. If SMU isn't an option this cycle, then sit out and apply next year. If you absolutely, positively refuse to wait, and Baylor isn't an option, then go to Tech. It's decently respected and it's inexpensive. Do not, under any circumstances, even consider attending Wesleyan.

Are there any threads about why Baylor students are so miserable?

Edit: Reading through the TLS page. Yikes, that sounds like hell.

I can answer in part to that. I went to Baylor for undergrad and it's WACO. I think that's the number one reason. Waco was probably one of the most horrible places to live, and the water was disgusting and you always had homeless people around your apartment complex.

I also heard the curriculum was competitive and difficult as well at Baylor. I don't see anymore people getting hired for better jobs with a Baylor degree in comparison to those who have UH or SMU degrees.

+1 on go to SMU or not at all if you're stuck in DFW.

But what exactly are the circumstances forcing you to stay in DFW? You can't change your gpa at this point and if you refuse to get a better LSAT or broaden your geographical range of schools to attend then law school is not looking like a great idea for you at this point in time.

My husband's job is the reason I'm stuck in DFW.

I'm going to retake the LSAT and apply for next cycle. There's no reason to incur debt if there's scholarship money available for a higher score.

The only way Texas Weslayan should be considered is if it's free. IMHO, I wouldn't even go to SMU right now without a serious scholarship.

If I was paying sticker, I would take UT or nothing at all.

FWIW I contacted SMU a couple days ago about applying after the application deadline because of my new LSAT score and they said I could apply (and I was given a fee waiver), so it may not be too late to apply. At the same time, they may have filled up their slots but if you could apply for Free/$21 it might be worth a try.

I have nothing to add other than serving as an additional voice that you should not, under any circumstances attend Texas Wesleyan for law school.

You think adding that festering TTTT of a state school's name to a law school can improve anything?

I don't think it would necessarily be "better" but it would probably increase applications which would raise tuition. The buyout probably won't be affecting this entering class.
