As part of their job, typically what kinds of lawyers get sent around the country or abroad? I'd assume the corporate, big-law lawyer gets to fly around in the private jet, but what other types of lawyers get to travel, and what kinds typically stay only within the same block of their office?

My most exotic travel destination has been Wilmington Delaware. Most other big law associates don't travel much. My friend got sent to Detroit for a couple months once. From what I hear, FCPA is the way to go for travel to other countries becuase you have lots of interviews of foriegn employees. I'm sure some M&A people travel, but I doubt the juniors do much travel.

Associate at V10. Most young corporate associates really don't get to travel all that much. There is some off-site due diligence work, but not much. My litigator colleagues have traveled much more in taking depositions. Lawyers don't travel like consultants.

corporate big-law lawyers do not have private jets. and associates definitely fly coach.

Construction law. My construction law prof says he travels a lot and the large general contracting corps that are BigLaw clients will fly partners around in private jets if there is an immediate need for them to be on-site.

Litigators travel more than corporate attorneys. Most big law firms have people fly coach now unless a business class seat is the only thing available. Bankruptcy attorneys that are not in New York or Delaware will travel a lot because bankruptcy cases are normally filed in the Southern District of New York or in Delaware. You should know that most people do not consider traveling for a business to be a perk. It's usually considered a downside of consulting, for example. You won't be flying to Paris.

I'd imagine lawyers who practice in federal court get to travel a lot with the diversity jurisdiction and all, right? I mean am I right that even a personal injury attorney in Kentucky might get to go to Chicago if a client sues a company there on a products liability tort or something?

No, I don't think that's correct. When a federal court sits in diversity, it has to have personal jurisdiction to the same extent as would a state court in the forum in which the federal court sits. Thus, diversity jurisdiction does not increase the geographic scope of your venue options.

Assuming P wants to bring state law tort claims with no class action, P would probably try to file in state court, which tends to be more friendly to Ps. Also, depending on what the Chi corporation is up to and where they conduct business, there might not even be diversity and you'd still be in state ct. Then the company would need to get some local counsel.

Assuming he wanted to file in Federal Court he would probably try to file in some KY court. P can get venue where a substantial portion of the events giving rise to the claim occurred. This would be the use and alleged injury caused by the product (happened locally). P could also file in Chi where the D resides but P probably doesn't want to travel, because it sucks ass, so he will file in KY. D might raise a forum non conviens challenge but those are hard to get. This situation would require some travel for D attys, or the Chi corp could hire some (probably cheaper) KY attys.

Labor law, but this is not glamorous travel & sometimes involves speaking in front of a large angry group of workers. Real estate partners when the primary investor is an Asian or European group or business.

This. Traveling for business is shitty. Security, delayed flights, coach seats, sick people, being away from your family, eating shitty food. Jobs that don't require travel are way better unless you are a professional athlete.
