I was the first in my immediate family to attend and complete college, however, I am second when including the rest of my family.

When writing a personal statement, would I be able to simply state something like "I was the first in my family to attend college" or would I need to phrase it like "I was the first in my immediate family to attend college?

I also have a year of retail management experience. Is this even a significant/relevant enough job to put in a put in a personal statement/resume?

You can say you are the first in your family. Can you imagine if they took the time to research your family history and then consequently ding you because your interpretation of their ambiguous question did not coincide with theirs?

I agree. When I use the phrase "my family," I'm generally referring to my immediate family.
