Top Law Schools

I know Northwestern does not. Does anyone know anything about the other schools. Thanks for saving me some time with the answers you post.

UVA doesn't, but everyone who participates in the writing competition gets on a journal. After the first round, there are maybe a couple dozen who do not get selected (you can only try out for two journals plus law review). You then have the option of "applying" to journals that still have slots. Applying consists of checking a box and writing an optional one page double-spaced letter of interest. I believe everyone in the last two years who tried out got onto a journal. But you do need to at least go through the writing competition to do this.

Also, pretty sure I've read that Yale has walk-ons for its secondary journals.

I don't know of any that literally have "walk on" policies. Some have modified work-on policies which allows you to write an essay to access conditional membership on a journal. You then get full membership provided your work is up to par. Advantages of this: no writing competition. Disadvantages: forego law review opportunity; have to write an essay.

Not sure which journals are like this though...

Some of the Journals at UVa (Criminal Law specifically and I think one or two others) allow you to join without doing the writing competition.

Penn's East Asia Law Review and Journal of Law and Social Change don't require a writing competition. The latter requires an application (I don't know if the East Asia does), but I've never heard of anyone failing the application and not getting on.

All of the non-law review journals are walk-on at Berkeley, no writing requirement or anything.

EDIT - the tech journal MAY require something but they are the only ones, I wasn't on it and don't know for sure.

Northwestern's IP journal actually does allow 1Ls to volunteer to be provisional members, and my understanding is that if you give a good faith effort you'll get an offer and won't have to do writeon. Is that what you mean by "walk on?"

I've also heard that everyone who does writeon with a good faith effort can get some secondary journal at Northwestern.
