My UHaul estimate for the smallest truck from Oregon to Chicago, including gas (probably a low estimate) and not including boxes, was $1700.

Do you have a vehicle or no?

I pulled a good sized closed Uhaul trailer from Virginia to Kansas for less than 300 bucks and I can't imagine SF to Chicago would be much more expensive. Seems the big cost comes if you have to rent a vehicle and not a trailer.

I didn't read this before posting but it does seem like the last sentence is key. 300 is a huge difference from ~$1500.

Well, obviously. One is a box with wheels, and one is a vehicle that costs...I don't even know.

You're not paying more because of size, you're paying more for the self-propelling vehicle, which is vastly more expensive. (See also: $80k motorhome vs. $15k fifth wheel trailer)

Plus the $1700 I mentioned included like $800 in gas, because the smallest UHaul truck gets 12mpg and PDX>CHI is like 2400 miles. (And I think that was using a gas price from several months ago, so it's probably higher now.)

I'm guessing the insurance factor is a big part of it too. I don't know if liability insurance on one's personal vehicle covers Uhaul's trailer, or more likely it doesn't but it is not expensive for them to insure a metal box.

If you live in SF and arn't planning on living there for the summer I'm currently frantically looking for place to live in SF for the summer. (internship). Craigslist is turning up little.

This is definitely the credited response. Penske quote was lower than Uhaul's and they were willing to negotiate. Uhaul may be too, but I didn't try.

Unfortunately no car, so will have to rent the full truck.

I wouldn't mind a rental car + trailer route (probably about the same price as renting the truck when added together, with the added benefit of being able to seat more than 2 people), so long as the rental car has a trailer hitch attached and insurance would cover it. The research I've done seems to indicate no rental car company allows this. Anyone know otherwise?

I got a pod from ABF for 1400 from SF to DC last year. It was fine for a 1 br. Negotiate. Their first price is not their best price.
