I am considering applying for the join JD/MBA program and I will need a qualifying GMAT score in order to participate. I was wondering if any other law students have taken a GMAT course or used GMAT study books...and of course what you thought about them. I did not take hardly any math classes in college...so I would need quite a bit of brushing up. Thanks!

Manhattan GMAT (which also operates other places besides manhattan) is the gold standard for prep courses, but it is pretty expensive (~$1500).

In my opinion, if you are relatively good at standardized tests, and have the self-discipline to make yourself study, you can do a "self-guided online course" for a few hundred bucks (~$600 for Manhattan GMAT, less if you do Princeton review). It'll cover the basics, get you familiar with the questions, and give you a few practice exams, which is all you really need. There's no advanced math (calculus, etc.) on the GMAT, so as long as you can do SAT-level math, it's just a matter of practicing and getting used to the questions.

Just get the GMAT books from GMAC. The review book, quant specific and verbal specific books. That's all you need to do well on the GMAT. It's basically a tougher version of the SAT.

Does your program not accept GRE scores? I would do that instead. If you mess up, you can always take the gmat.

I can also take the GRE... is it easier?

I've heard that you can learn all the math necessary online for free via the Kahn Academy.
I'll probably try it out myself, for the same purpose.

The self guided manhatten gmat course is great as long as you make yourself do it. They outline a 10 week study plan but it's way more hours than they say it is (they say ~20 hrs a week). For me to get through the math intensive weeks it took me closer to 30 hours but then I spent less time on the verbal because I had a solid backing from all my LSAT studying.

You can buy the individual Manhattan GMAT books for far less than the course package. The online practice tests are helpful, but frankly they aren't that accurate (except the official GMAT tests). Buy the Manhattan books and the official gmat guides and use those to study, then take the official GMAT practice tests to evaluate your scores to see if you need to improve on some areas.

As noted by other posters, you don't really need to study LR or reading comp for the GMAT after you've done reasonably well on the LSAT. The sentence correction stuff is totally bizarre at some points though, so you will need to do some review for that.

ETA: GMAT format is changing too, you might want to try to take the test before the format change. I'm not sure anyone really knows much about the new format.

Also note that the gmat is adding another section starting on june, so the older materials won't address that.

Worth taking a look at The GMAT Pill - they've been getting lots of good reviews and are also a good deal cheaper than Manhattan etc..

They should be announcing some major upgrades coinciding with the launch of the Integrated Reasoning section in June.

The most important thing about the GMAT is that the earlier questions carry greater weight than thè later questions, so take your time and make sure you ace the first few questions.
Seriously, getting the first three right and missing the last five (no time) is better than getting the first two wrong and those last five all correct

Did a MGMAT practice test cold turkey and scored a 580...yuck. My math sucked...but the only verbal questions I got wrong were sentence completion which I hear is easy to correct. I enrolled in the self guided MGMAT plus course ( I have access to the pre-recorded classes) hope it helps!
