Some schools have probably checked applicants' facebooks. They can't see stuff that's private.

The most obvious solution is, as always, to just not be a fucking idiot. Or at least to not put pictures of it on facebook.

The simplest solutions are the best ones.

Law schools all subscribe to the NDR (National Data Registry) which crawls through and archives Facebook (including photos) records on a weekly basis.

They cross reference facial symmetry features with government databases, high school yearbooks, and family photos.

In other words, they know what you did last Halloween.

I would assume so. Change your name on fb. Make it private and just dont put stupid shit on there.

Also make sure that your Linked In page is polished and up-to-date. My profile views skyrocketed a few weeks after I sent in my applications, so I assume some schools actively searched for me...

Deactivate your facebook during the cycle. Trust me, you are not missing anything important.

Hire a mariachi band to show up at their home and/or place of employment.

Also, to OP and anybody else reading, just set your profile to private, choose your FB friends wisely, and don't post anything incredibly stupid/illegal. Done.

i've done this.

you do miss out on a lot of event notifications and the like, though.
If they actually want you to come, you'll get texts. Or emails. Or something. You're not losing much, believe me.
If you're still in undergrad, you'll miss out on free food from organizations.

MMM I don't think this is true because I would not have gotten in anywhere I used to have illicit drug use on my face book and my space including but not limited to my name spelled out in a certain powdery substance...

Can't see why law schools would care. Employers would certainly care.

On a related matter- lots of law schools have Class of 2015 Facebook groups - one or two even invite you to join in their letters of admission. I'd like to join them and see what kinds of conversations are happening among the admitted students, but I'm concerned about my privacy. No photos of anything illegal or particularly questionable on my FB, but it still makes me nervous that my conversations with others could be seen. Is the general consensus that it's safe for admitted students to go ahead and join these Facebook groups?s?

If you don't say anything objectionable, how could it possibly matter if others can see what you say?
Plus many (most?) of those groups are private so only members can see what's going on anyway.

I'm all about privacy, but the tinfoil hat paranoia about Facebook is baffling. JUST DON'T POST ANYTHING STUPID.

I should clarify. My dumb friends post a lot of really strange things on my wall. :P

I'm in a few facebook groups where I'm not friends with every single person in the group on fb. I still can't see their stuff. Only what they post in the group.

Can it hurt once you are accepted? No. It is quite simple. If you are concerned with privacy than don't have a Facebook. It makes no sense for someone to say thay are all about privacy and have a facebook.

I made my living for 5 years off of application development, and I wish facebook was never developed, butit is a personal preference. Here is a test: Go on facebook, if you find yourself completely uninterested by more than 75% of its content, delete it. If you spend more than 1 hr a day on facebook, delete it. if looking at your page shows someone that you've been invited to any keg parties, delete it.

As someone who has hired recent college graduates for software development positions, I would say that a highly active facebook is never perceived well by employers. Can not offer an opinion on law firms or law schools views of it but I would say if you are worried enough about it to ask TLS, just get rid of it...at least for the rest of the cycle.

Wow...

What's your source for this info?

Career services has told us all about the hiring practices at firms which obviously include thorough google checks. But I had no idea the admission departments at schools did anything like this.
