just curious what sort of issues come up with locating to your new school's area. i'm not certain where i'm gonna go yet, but i am assuming the reasonable period to move to school X's city would be around 1-4 weeks before classes start.

I'm getting married in late July, so I'll be moving pretty early, especially if I get into Chicago. When do loans kick in so that I can pay for the apartment?

I'd imagine it may vary slightly by school but ours was disbursed the first week of classes.

yeah, that's gonna suck, especially if I move in over two months before classes.

How about finding a place to live? When do you do all that stuff? I was thinking of moving in like a month early.. is this not necessary?

We found a place to live about a month before we moved. We also moved about a month before school started since my SO was looking for a job. But unless you feel like spending time exploring the city it really isn't necessary to move that far in advance.

It is annoying. Thankfully we had money saved up so that we could pay for rent and other stuff.

So is there any advantage to moving on August 1? Maybe easier to find a place? I'm super excited to move to a new area so I kind of want to get an early jump :D

Although, I guess if you live in the dorms (at NYU, say) you can't move till a certain date anyways?

I've been told (in re: downtown Chicago, at least) that a lot more apartments are available if you're willing to sign your lease in June as opposed to July or August.

Classes start beginning of Sept, with orientation the last week of Aug, so I was planning on moving around August 1, but possibly signing a lease earlier than that if I need to.

I've never lived in an urban area without a car (always suburban), so I want to be settled and figure out how to do the day-to-day things like grocery shopping and laundry before I add in the stress of class.

Plus I want some time to explore Chicago.

I quit my job early, moved, and spent about one and a half months exploring the area around my school. I really wish I wouldn't have done that. I ended up TLSing and and doing pointless 0L prep out of nervousness. It was a huge waste of time.

moved in the day of orientation! did not really miss that much I think...but if you're living off campus probably a week is a good idea!

I moved about three weeks before classes started. The extensive survey of the bars between my apartment and NYU nearly killed me.
