That said, I am open to working in legal academia. Aren't there some paths to take where you're not just writing masturbatory bullshit, but actually publishing stuff that has direct implications for real life?

I mean, every once in a blue moon an article actually has an impact. For example, Lynn LoPucki's book on public choice in bankruptcy venue selection is one of the main drivers behind the bankruptcy venue reform movement (which may or may not be a good idea and probably will never happen). Obviously, folks like Sunstein wrote themselves into relevance. But those folks are certainly not the norm.

Yes, there is. Some professors write on relevant topics such as national security, environmental regulation, and criminal/evidentiary stuff.

Some write on complete bullshit that nobody cares about, but c'est la vie. If you wanted to be an academic in a field where you're not writing about bullshit, and you have the grades/credentials to make it into the academy, you can do so.
