what schools outside of the T14 have big law opp?
I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I really appreciate any insight! I was just wondering if certain schools such as Notre Dame, Vandy and Fordham have strong NYC biglaw placement opportunity? (esp ND and V because they are not near NYC)
Thank you!!
Thank you!!

The best non-T14 schools for NYC biglaware are probably Vandy, Fordham, BU, BC, and GW. I wouldn't even consider Notre Dame is your focus.

Not sure if you have seen this list before, but here are the 2010 numbers: http://www.law.com/jsp/nlj/PubArticleNL ... hbxlogin=1
In short, there are no lower ranked schools that have better placement than the t14 (generally) though consensus seems to be that Vandy/GWU/BC/BU/Fordham are the best bets outside the t14 for NYC (not necessarily in that order).

25% into NYC big firm?! You are looking at the wrong tier of schools.

LOL @ ND. And LOL at 25% being strong.
HYS = 70% - 80%
CCN = 60% - 70%
T7 - T13 = 50% - 60%
T14 - T18 = 35% - 50%
Anything after that cannot be considered remotely strong.
Note: Based on everything I read, the percentages are fairly accurate (but not necessarily exact) I think.

Considering BU/BC place like 30% in NLJ250 firms and the majority are in Boston, I dunno how strong you'd consider them for the NYC market. Fordham and Cardozo are probably better options in that regard.

Sorry but the above post is a bit wrong. I know a bunch of people in top 10-15% at BU who were able to secure NY jobs pretty easily (those who focused on NY had a much easier time than those who focused on Boston). Whereas there are a number of top 10-15% people at Cardozo and Brooklyn who don't even have jobs yet.

Fair enough. I'm 0L and just extrapolating on the NLJ stats and what I've heard about where BU places. TY for the info. I imagine that top 15% at Fordham would have good options for NYC firms, though?kaiser wrote:Sorry but the above post is a bit wrong. Oh yeah, Id imagine top 15% at Fordham wouldn't have much trouble at all getting NLJ250 jobs in NY.

HYS is too low. Harvard had a really bad year with C/O 2011 where it was down to 80%, but I think it went back up after they moved around OCI. Y/S are near 100% as far as I know.lawyerwannabe wrote:LOL @ ND. And LOL at 25% being strong.

You shouldn't even talk about big law outside the T14. However, the strongest schools outside of that range are USC/UCLA/BC/BU/Texas/Vanderbilt/Fordham. That's pretty much it.sportgirl234 wrote:I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I really appreciate any insight! However, you should note that "big law," as defined as the NLJ250, puts southern schools, such as Vanderbilt and Texas, at a disadvantage to their northern/west coast peers. While those two place fewer people in the NLJ250, there are more mid-sized firms in south that hire graduates from those schools (particularly in Texas and to a lesser extent, in Atlanta).

I'm pretty sure C/0 2012 at Harvard was still in the 75-80% range. ITE H is a CCN peer more than it is a YS peer.rayiner wrote:HYS is too low. Re: what schools outside of the T14 have big law opp?
I don't think so. For c/o 2012, ~75% biglaw placement is about right, but most of the remaining ~25% can be attributed to self-selection (many at DOJ/FTC/SEC/USAO/ACLU according to the list of summer positions OCS puts together). Thus, for those who wanted biglaw, HLS is probably above 90%.Flash wrote:I'm pretty sure C/0 2012 at Harvard was still in the 75-80% range.
