Top Law Schools

Hello,

I'm in need of a laptop and I am starting law school in fall of 2012 but I have seen info that says some law schools require you purchase from the school. I really don't want to buy a laptop now if I'm going to be forced to buy one later from my LS. Does it just depend on the school?

They definitely don't require you to buy it with loan money, they just allocate money in your loan budget to purchase a laptop.

This isn't true. Some schools do in fact require you to purchase a new laptop through them. Check with the law schools you're applying to (this information will be on their prospective students' website). IIRC U of Minnesota Law is one where you have to buy their laptop even if you have one already. Not sure what other schools have similar requirements. None of the t14s do.

You're talking about the laptop purchase requirement (not my post), correct? If so, I definitely agree that it is completely stupid and unnecessary. It doesn't change the fact that it exists.

For the rest of you thank you for replying I actually saw the laptop requirement on Minn's website so that is exactly why I created this post. I just wanted to know if this was a normal practice. Cheers.

I don't know much about the new technology, only have so many things my simple mind can follow at once so my knowledge is limited to football, food and some news at an elementary level.

I want to get a comp just for law school free of any distractions like fancy gadgets and especially facebook, espn, etc.

I'll still have my other comp for all my garbage.

What is simple, cheap, easy to carry but won't make me look like a girl and most importantly reliable?

Would you feel comfortable typing a small novel on a netbook? If your hands are larger than those of a Keebler Elf, probably not.

As a netbook user (with a "big" laptop too), I'll say that the smaller keyboard (as long as its not one of the cheap, flimsy ones) is actually plenty comfortable for most stuff. I wrote my UG senior thesis on it, but I would definitely recommend having something faster, with more RAM and a more comfortable screen and keyboard for the house. You can get a decent netbook and a pretty good desktop for roughly the same price as a mac, so long as you're not trying to do crazy shit on either one.

I've seen a few people using iPads and they seem fine with it. As long as it can run the exam software it's kosher.
