I have an mac, but really want onenote. I can't run onenote through parallels, because it has conflicts with my carbonite. Money isn't really an issue, but I don't want to buy something I really don't need.

Would you just get a pc, or would you just run circusponies and go with it?

It's really not worth it. I use the Notebook view in Word and it's worked just fine for me.

How many gigs you got on your laptop? I just went from 4gigs to 6gigs and it works great. Not sure what carbonlite is and how it reacts with onenote, but with 6+ gigs of RAM, you should be fine.

I have a friend who runs parallels with 8gigs of RAM, it rocks!!!

12gigs to start; it now has a little under 6gigs. The issue is that I also have carbonite, and for some reason parallels doesn't work with carbonite activated. I would def. want all of my notes backed up via carbonite, so I don't know if I can run it through parallels. I could just get an external hard drive just for the windows via parallels...idk.

Also, I have a 1.5 year old air, so maybe it's time to get a new laptop anyways? But, it seems a bit wasteful to not use a perfectly functioning computer. Grr guilt from depression era grandparents.

I guess I could just disable carbonite. For those of you who have used onenote: Is it really that awesome?

I tried the 30 day trial of circus ponies,and tried growly notes.

I prefer growly notes (plus it's free).
Works great, you should at least check it out before buying anything.

I think OneNote is nice to have, but it's not necessary in order to succeed 1L year. I wouldn't buy a new laptop just to get it, tbh.

onenote is worth it. you do NOT need to buy a pc though. I have a mac and use onenote.

You can run windows programs while still running OSX. You're welcome.



(I don't endorse this... but these programs can be a bit pricey... and I think you might be able to... get them "from a friend" on the internet somewhere)

doesn't that mean he can't do that?

You realize you can use bootcamp to boot into windows natively right? Parallels is an emulator.

Growly Notes. I used Circus Ponies, hated it and switched. Couldn't be happier -- Growly Notes isn't exactly OneNote, but it's almost the same thing and it's free.

2L here. Keep in mind that not all professors allow electronics in class. Last semester 3/5 of my professors banned laptops and I had to take paper notes.

Buying a new computer is probably not worth it, unless you were going to buy a new pc anyway.

VMware for 70 bucks. Virtualization is where its at!

Dont know if this has been said....but you can use Word on OfficeMac 2010 or whatever year they have now and set it to Notebook view, which is very, very close to Onenote (I started law school with a PC and Onenote and switched to a Mac last year as a 2L). The Notebook view allows you to use tabs for each class session and separate notebooks for each course. It's very similar, I think. The outline function is very similar as well.

Crossover might work for you.

+1. A lot cheaper than buying a new computer. Plus boot camp gives you full access to windows as a second OS. You can even take exams on windows side (some schools don't have mac support for exams).

I had to make the same choice as you. After being a mac guy for a few years I went back to pc because I didn't want to mess around with vm ware and all that garbage. Too complicated. With windows 7, mac OS lost its advantages. The PC was definitely the better choice. After way to much research, I bought a Lenovo t-420s with a solid state hard drive and the expansion bay battery. It strikes a wonderful balance between portability, power, and battery-life, and durability. I also bought the three year at home service which is great (and inexpensive). If my computer breaks an IBM person comes to my house same day or next and fixes it...pretty rad. No down time.
