At my undergrad, NC was the term they used if you failed a course -- of course, if we failed it was non-punitive.
Conversely, I audited a number of classes and don't think that counted against me. Adcoms will recognize what it means to audit and shouldn't hurt your chances/LSAC GPA.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I'll audit it then. It's a little extra paperwork (versus none for NC), but I want to take no chances. I think I'll call LSAC this afternoon and see what they say as well.
