Is a a median class ranking in Vanderbilt or Northwestern better than top 10% at t40?
I'm not talking about any of the t6 but the high t14's (northwestern or Duke).
And how about top 10% at t50?

Top 10% at t40 is probably better (although it certainly depends on the t14 and the market), but this should not influence one's choice of schools as one cannot expect to place considerably better in a t40 class than a t14 class.

Top 10% at T50. Buy it swings quite quickly the other way. I'd rather be top 1/3 at a T14 than top 10% at one of T50s that aren't Fordham. Or median at a T14 than top 20% at a T50. At most T50s pre-screening and reporting of class rank kills students outside the magic cut-offs.

Subtle Georgetown trolling.

After you finish median at your T14, travel in your time machine to the time you were deciding schools, choose the T40, and finish in the top 10%, re-create this thread. We will advise you on what to do next. hth

Is it not messed-up that we all don't have the data to definitively answer this question?

There is no distinction between top 10% at a t40, a t50, and in most cases a t100. HTH.

What makes you exclude Fordham from that list of T50s? I'm not disagreeing, just genuinely curious (I'm in the process of deciding what schools to apply to)

Depends on which T40 school you are talking. I'd much rather be top 10% at GW, Fordham, BU or BC than median at almost any T14 short of the T6, and even at that level, its a toss up which spot I'd rather be in.

NYC firms still hire from top 10% at Fordham. Most don't even do OCI at the rest of the T50.

I was under the impression that most of the firms dip down the rankings for diversity hires. So, when it's 10% of Fordham, it's actually more like top 5% and then diversity hires and people with contacts.
Is this not correct?
I meant for your average white guy student. Also the CW is true to an extent but overstated.

I love how men hurl accusations of PC around to avoid admitting that their statements could be read as exclusionary and offensive. At any rate, it wasn't about being PC, it was about being clear that women aren't considered diversity hires. HTH.

I wasn't being exclusionary and offensive. I meant white guys. I believe that being a pretty girl gives a small boost.

I thought you might mean specifically men, which is why I asked. Also, yay for the potential for a small boost

I guess I should have added "how much more difficult is it to finish top 10 at t50 than median at t14?" in the original post.
Okay I guess I'll ask it now: how much more difficult is it to finish top 10 at t50 than median at t14?

I would say it's much more difficult to finish top 10% at T50 than median at T14.
Wherever you go, odds are you will perform about median. I think you're have to look at vastly different schools (have T14 numbers and attend Cooley or something) to gain a marked advantage in predicting a high class rank.
