In all seriousness, I was able to solicit a lunch meeting with a partner for tomorrow. I'm a 0L, so I'm sure I'm going to come off as a total newbie during the lunch meeting tomorrow. However, I also realize this is rare opportunity to come by, so if anyone has any questions that they would like to be answered, I can probably ask them tomorrow and get some answers for my fellow TLSers.

How did you develop your rainmaking capabilities? Are they nature or nurture?

How long were you an associate to make partner?

How long have you been a partner? Do you feel a growth in responsibilities? More flexibility? Higher salary?

What is the salary level for partners in your company?

How do you advance? What are you looking for in an associate?

Quality questions =) It took him 8 years to make partner (I did some bio check). But I'll def ask the other questions (except for maybe the salary question....)

Do not ask the salary question. Just no.

Just ask the standard questions:

1. How much do you make?

2. Can I bang your wife and/or daughter?

Etc.

Yup, these two should be good enough. :) I hope his daughter is at least 18!

As I learned from Mark Sanchez, the age of consent in NJ is 16. Get on it.

How much blow is too much? Does that matter if you are doing it off a hooker, stripper, or gold digger?

How did you choose your firm? What did you like most about it? Is that still true?

What would you say are the most important personal/work related qualities in a new associate? In a partner?

How did you choose your practice area? If you had to choose a different one, what would you do and why? What personal qualities does it take to succeed in your practice area? To enjoy it?

Ask about his experience of law school. What were his favorite courses? What did he go to law school intending to do? How did his goals change while he was there and why?

Sorry if these are basic but this is pretty much what I'd want to know.

So, where do you think law is headed within the context of our changing systems and economy? I know I have the right capacities, and would like to hear from someone with your level of experience about how best to focus them.

Ask him if it is T13 or T14 or T15...he will know, and we need to settle this shit.

I would just chat about complete BS. Ask for their business card and then call them in a year.

Thanks to the few people that responded constructively in this thread. I have a similar opportunity soon and appreciate the comments.

They expect you to come off as a total newbie. Embrace it.

For the most part, there are no new and exciting facts you will learn from him/her. Just ask them about their career and what they like about it. Be personable and get to know them.

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.
