I emailed one of the law schools that I applied to that still hasn't responded (not even the waitlist), and their response was that they had until May 1st to make a decision about my application. Now I've decided where I want to go to law school, but it bugs me that LSAC allows law schools to do this.

I feel you. It is BS, but I think it shows the level the school cares about you in relation to its other applicants to keep you waiting so long. I just play waitlists as situations that would be great if they happen, but pretend they are not going to happen. I agree it is unfair when schools review your file past April 1 without so much as waitlisting you, but at least it does show their sentiment - they care about your pocket book substantially less than you care about their prestige.

However, I think you played it wrong and uncool. In the grand scheme of things, the admissions office can make you wait, lose $1,000 and even make you cry, but does that really matter in the general course of your career? I'm a big proponent of playing everything ice cool, and thanking them for every contact and every response they give me. Is it a load of bull? Sure, but so is their "Thank you for contacting us" garbage when everyone knows we interrupted them from shopping for shoes on Amazon or fixing their college basketball brackets.
