Top Law Schools

I was thinking of transferring from a tier 3 law school to a Tier 1
after the end of my first semester as a 2L. Is this possible?

Check out the transfer forum and do a forum search for "2L transfer." Not that any of us are experts on this site, but the general consensus is that it's not possible. At the very least, there are no transfers who have pulled this off that I know of.

Alternatively, call the school you want to transfer to and ask their admissions office if it's possible.

Other alternative, study at the other school as a visiting student. You will receive your degree from your home institution.

Why would you want to do that, and not just try to transfer at the end of 1L when everyone else sends in transfer apps?

My GPA and class rank are not yet high enough for me to be a reasonable contender.

Well, try your best this spring to raise your grades and decide based on whether it's feasible after the spring. Most fall grades don't come out until the following spring semester has already started, so I don't see how any school could make a decision whether to admit you over winter break, even if some school allowed this process.

If permitted by any target law school, you would have to complete two full academic years at your new school. Essentially, therefore, you would be paying for an extra semester & graduating with an extra semester's worth of credits. Most likely situation would be a transfer due to a serious family situation requiring you to relocate--at least, that's my best guess.

Are you saying that law schools allow you to take more than 3 years worth of credits?
