Undergrad Ranking

I tried searching for this topic but couldn't find anything or must have missed it...

Anyway, I attend a Tier 4 university but have nearly a 4.0 GPA in it.

How much of a bearing will the ranking have on admission into a Tier 1 law school, possibly even the T-14?

I admit the competition from students from higher ranked institutions is concerning me. I'm applying nonetheless, but looking for other opinions.

Thanks

None. People from shit undergrads get in T14s all the time.

Mostly no effect. Some schools will take into account difficulty of the UG but most won't.

Yeah, I hope this will be the case with me.

I'm in the honors college that really does offer more advanced coursework as well as a senior thesis requirement so hopefully that will prove I sought the more challenging route...

This and USNWR doesn't care about which UG the GPA comes from ipso facto law schools likely won't care much either.

This topic degenerated into a discussion of whether UG rep matters. Almost everyone here will say no, but I still think UG reputation is a soft like any other. Adcomms will want to judge the academic rigor of your UG degree, and part of this is looking generally at the quality of the institution and specifically at the strength of your course load.

Of course, nothing trumps a strong lsat.

Actually, one of the profs at the law school I will be attending is from my same craptastic undergrad as me (and it was even more craptastic 10 years ago). Seems like no one cares.

Thanks for this, reading through it now.

AreJay711, hooray for craptastic undergrads! Honestly though, even though I was severely disappointed in the lack of academic competitiveness, I can't say I hate my school. I like my professors and the student body is generally pleasant (although had different priorities, to say the least) and I did get a full ride. I also had the opportunity to achieve a lot here, like partake in undergraduate research, write for the student paper, work on campus in the Paralegal department (whose faculty were lawyers and judges). It's been a nice experience, really. I just wish it were ranked higher. :-)

My guess is that if you have a low LSAT, schools will be much less likely to admit you as they may be skeptical of your undergrad performance. People from reputable UGs will probably make up the majority of below median LSATs at most schools, if that makes sense.

If you apply to a school where your LSAT is at or above median, then they won't give a shit about your UG regardless of how T4 it is.

If it was a 4.0 at Harvard, it would be to your advantage. Since it is a 4.0 at a tier 4, it won't hurt you. I ask many people what undergrad they went to and it is at school's I've NEVER heard of or only know because I live in that city.

I know many people who went to Northern Illinois and who now have MBA's from the University of Chicago.

You have to realize at MBA programs that is actually the exception, not the rule. At LS it doesn't matter, though.

Getting above a 170 will justify that your 4.0 is worth something. Won't be as valuable as a 4.0 at a tier 1 of course, but it won't hurt you that much if you back it up with a top-level LSAT score

Cornell commencement address? Sorry, but Tracy Jordan doesn't do safety schools.

Did you just try to use Tracy Jordan as evidence for academic superiority? lol

Also, there are at least 8 schools not in the ivy league which are better than Cornell. Arguably more. Acting like the ivy league distinction really matters to those who matter is stupid, just as many, if not more, northwestern kids are getting recruited by the top firms.
