1. Does all your loan money get released at once, aka in 1 lump sum?

2. If it does, has anyone tried to negotiate a lower rent amount by paying the entire year upfront? Any advice with that?

cannot give a good answer as to #1 in the current era

as to #2, it all depends on the complex...some will cut a small break while others will not. This tends to hold true even on individual houses...when I was looking for temp housing north of Houston a few years ago, it was not prime lake season but I was still rejected on an offer for six months upfront in exchange for a drop to $1700 a month (they wanted $2K which was reasonable DURING prime lake season but not the offseason, especially since the boathouse needed some work after Ike).

1. our school does it in two lump sums, at the beginning of each semester.

2. i think it's worth a shot, especially if you have a shaky credit history.

At least with my UG financial aid, it was all one sum. However, it was pretty close to the start of fall semester so I'm not sure how it would work, assuming you will already be living in whatever location when the money is disbursed, hence you will have already had to pay some rent. If that makes sense. Otherwise, I think it's totally worth a try if you can do it.
