Top Law Schools

In a discussion comparing UT to Cornell, Cornell has more lay prestige every day of the week in every part of the country. It's Ivy, it's an Ivy that people know is an Ivy, etc.

On the other hand, when it comes to Sports, you can walk into any coffee shop, repair garage and grocery store in America and they'll tell you that every team that the University of Texas has is amazing. If you ask about Cornell, they might throw out a guess about hockey (but only because Ithaca looks like Canada).

To talk of prestige is to talk of utility. Of getting a card or an interview or a date you might not otherwise get because someone is impressed with your credentials. I already know what lay prestige looks like, but does the sports prestige do any work for you?

Neither matter. People who interview or are related in law hiring know the real rankings. Laymen won't be giving you interviews.

if you played sports there, sure. lol at getting a job or a date because you were a student at a school that had good sports teams.

Balls get you laid and balls gets you a job. So grow a pair. Balls at UIUC > no balls at harvard

These things obviously don't do the work for you. Obviously. But lay prestige gives you an edge. I was just wondering if sports prestige would make you more interesting, give you something to talk about, make you more memorable. Something along those lines.

I would say sports, but I have a fratty personality. I dont want to here someone tell me about how they went to Hahvard, I want to share memorable moments that involved liquor and chasing women

I haven't, but my brother lives there. You think it's rough being a Texas fan in Oklahoma City? Try being a Boise Broncos fan in Sooner's territory. haha

I'm a Sooner fan in Oklahoma, and I have little regard for either haha.

Oh god, I almost drank coffee before seeing this. I guess there is a reason it's called a UTerus.

Also, businesswise I think sports might be relevant if you're dealing with the hoi polloi. Wealthy clients will prefer the Ivy status and ranking. Biglaw will prefer the ranking and maybe the Ivy status.

not sure how much it really helps but it can definitely be an ice breaker, I went to a big sports school UG and its made initial conversations easier once in a while...

Sports prestige does little if the school is easy to get into. Example: LSU.. Louisianians love LSU, but everyone and there brother has gone there. You're not going to get a job offer if your school cranks out thousands of students every year, regardless of how popular the institution is. You're just not special enough.

IDK LSU has some recognition in other areas because of it's football program so it might mean something out of market. If I met someone that went to LSU my thoughts about his or her education would be positive because I hear about LSU pretty frequently.

There is some correlation between sports prestige=quality, but I think it is largely overblown and irrelevant.

Schools from BCS conferences have more national cache than non-BCS schools, due to exposure. For instance, I'd never heard of W&L until I started applying to law school. BCS schools will carry a nationwide recognition that other schools won't.

Also, those schools obviously have a lot of wealthy alumni donors who provide the university with a lot of non-govt. money. The more money your school has (theoretically) the better the academic product.

Still, most of the sports prestige is going to work on people who didn't go to college. When they ask you where you went to school, and you say, "University of State," they will respond, "That's a good school." And that will be the extent of your sports prestige leverage.

I went to the University of Oklahoma. I'm sure 90% of people know who Sam Bradford is, but very few know our university President and he's a far more influential figure.

In my experience they are pretty similar. Unless you're a legendary, traditional school like Yale or Harvard, without sports many people won't even know of the college's existence. So I learned when I told people I EDed to NYU and acted like it was a New York community college (this was in the Bay Area).
