I am sure that this question has been asked before; I just wasn't entirely sure how to phrase a forum search on the specific topic. I was curious at what point, success at a lower ranked school starts to overtake the prestige of a slightly higher ranked school i.e. would top 10% UCLA be more valued by employers over top 25% at NYU or top 50% at Harvard?

Obviously there are tons of factors that employers take into account; I'm just curious how prestige of the institution you were part of rates in relation to how you performed at said institution.

There is no set point. Different employers value different things. A district court judge in California would more likely to take the person from UCLA. A large firm in NYC would be more likely to take the person from NYU or Harvard.

It's also worth noting that Harvard does not give traditional grades. It's Honors/Pass/Low Pass- so you can't directly compare a Harvard person to a UCLA person.

Top 1% at HLS > Bottom 1% at YLS
Top 10% at SLS > Bottom 90% at HLS
