patent law? It seems like everyone believes that IP is a relatively thriving subsection of the legal industry (in comparison to the industry as a whole), but when this is said are people referring specifically to patent law, particularly to patent law, mostly patent law, or the subsection as a whole? I understand the demand for patent law (requires undergrad degree that, by and large, would have landed you a sweet enough job not to need law school), but don't see why a need would go unfilled in other areas.

Although the term IP is technically not limited to patent law, I think you're correct that people use the term as a proxy for patent law, particularly in the context you mentioned. Patent law seems to be where most of the action is.

It is pretty much just patent.
