Never realized the importance of lay prestige until...

Post by abitaman6363 » Sun Nov 28, 2010 3:34 pm

An acquaintance recently asked where I wanted to go and had been accepted. I replied that my dream was Yale (which I have yet to hear from) but that I was accepted to Harvard.

The reply: "You freaking idiot! Why the hell would you pass up Harvard for Yale? Is Yale even that good."

Wow. When Yale is not getting respect, something is wrong.

PS I just realized I titled this "...the importance of lay prestige..." Lay prestige is NOT that important imo.

Yale will always have to deal with being Harvard's ugly stepsister.

It's a good thing you're going to be an HYS grad, b/c social skills like this are a great example of how non-HYSers get OCI-pwnd.

It's about getting into Harvard and having ignorant (compared to OP, of course) friends.

Wow....lots of brutality towards the OP.
But I guess this board is renowned for being anti-elitist.....

Anyway, if I may venture a guess, OP was merely pointing out his surprise at how misguided lay prestige may be.

Of course, here in Pittsburgh the lay people rank the schools:
1) Pitt and Duquesne
2) Harvard
3) all the other schools.

Well, here in the UP the lay ranking goes:

1. Harvard (source: legally blond)
2. Can't think of any other law schools

I just watched Legally Blonde again the other day (top 10 favorite movies for sure), for the first time since I took the LSAT. I was so pissed at her. Granted, a 4.0/179 is awesome, but she got a 146 on her diagnostic and "blew off Greek Week to study" and that got her a 179.

I loved when I got to call my friend who just got into HLS "Elle" though.

I don't think it was necessarily the "elitist" aspect of the post that people reacted to (or maybe im just speaking for myself to avoid being a hypocrite lol). It was the way in which the OP "pointed out" this lay prestige discrepancy between Yale and Harvard. Nevermind that threads of a similar nature have been created over and over again, the OP could have made the post sound a lot less like poorly-concealed bragging and self-importance, and more like genuine shock over the idea that HLS is often seen as a much 'stronger' school than YLS.

The shame and dishonor I would feel if my friends didn't bow at my feet in acknowledgment of the prestige I exude...I so dearly feel your pain, OP.

Which funnily enough is effected by the lay prestige of your LS. So we are back where we started.

Yeah. Lay prestige is how helpful your school's prestige is in helping you get...

So now I'm thinking the OP is having getting problems getting laid. And is asking TLS for help?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
