Am I a "Non-Traditional" Applicant?

I've been following the TLS forums for months now and finally decided to register and ask a question:
As the child of refugees from the Middle East (non-URM), would I be considered a "non-traditional" applicant? If so, what benefit, if any, is there to being non-traditional? Or is this refugee, American dream thing just a good topic for my PS and nothing else?
THANKS

No. Non-traditional students are old people, basically.

If my understanding is correct, that's not what non-traditional means. Non-traditional usually refers to people who have had careers already.
you should write a Diversity Statement though for those schools that allow it.

Thanks, I just wasn't clear on what non-traditional means. Also, if I'm writing about this for my PS, would adding a DS just be redundant? Or am I better off writing on a different topic for PS and then using this for DS??

We're not necessarily old. We're just not children.

Yes it will be redundant. Pick a different topic for your PS if you can and save the refugee stuff for the DS.

Actually, a non-Trad is someone who:
- is not someone coming out of undergrad with no clue

Apparently, a non-trad is also someone who is humorless.

hmm sounding a little insecure about your lack of experience with the snarky comments
