I've heard a Harvard or Yale degree does wonders...

I would say something that connects you to the community. So obviously public interest would be the first to pop into mind but honestly you can practice any kind of law you want you just need to make sure you are establishing a name for yourself within the community in other ways if its not professionally. Volunteer your services for a charity or something, become a member of the school board or another entity. Thats all I can think of right now but I hope you get the point.

Btw, no one really practices "constitutional law." While the Constitution is of course relevant to most litigators, there is no practice area that could really be termed "constitutional law."

Unless you get into Harvard or Yale, go to the best law school that's in the area where you wish to run. You will start building local connections and people won't resent you because they think that you went to a fancy shamncy law school.

I don't think this is totally true.
