If I get accepted to law school, can I defer it and choose to attend a year later?

I got offered an incredible opportunity, but it may end before law school or it may not.

I want to apply to law school in case it ends before, but if it doesn't I can't just back out.

Usually, at least for a year. Depends on what you'd be doing instead and the school, but this is reasonably common.
