Can anyone point me in the right direction for placement statistics for these two schools in nyc?

I'm fairly sure this would be entirely due to self-selection.

Pure statistics and numbers are not going to tell the whole story, due to self-selection. CLS is more heavily populated by students intending to practice in NYC when they graduate, and that's going to skew the numbers. You can't just look at them side-by-side and think they actually represent odds of finding work.

Edit: Damn, bk, beat me to it.

At CLS, about 60-70% of those who did EIP in 2009 got offers, altho this number includes all BigLaw and not just NYC. The numbers from this summer will be out in March 2011.

And yeah I get self-selection. So whats' the general attitude w/r to choosing between these two schools for ny?

:) Typing shorter responses helps with being first, though you gave the reasons behind the response.

I would say SLS due to higher prestige and less competition from classmates for NYC.

Almost all firms would hire "more deeply" into the class at SLS than CLS. It has a legitimately stronger reputation.

That being said, if you're interested in both, CLS will still do good things for you and the whole "living in new york" thing can't be discounted entirely from the equation. If CLS tosses $$$ at an applicant, and NYC biglaw is the only aspiration (i.e. clerking / academia / govt positions aren't on the radar) I feel like it's more of a toss-up.

Step 1.) Go to SLS
Step 2.) Stop wanting to work in NYC when you realize how awesome CA is
Step 3.) Enjoy excellent job in SF

though to be fair, SF firms are doing poorly on the whole at the moment. I would feel safer in NY, or if I had to stay in CA, LA.

OP if you have the option, choose SLS.

If you're set on NYC biglaw, I would say SLS > CLS but CLS+$$$ > SLS. And if you get into SLS, you probably have $$$ at CLS. But it's not a decision that will make a huge difference; just visit both schools and decide which you like more.

True, but summers in SF are 60-70 and our winters don't have snow. Not sure how NYC can top that. :D

Yea, except outside of SF, Cali is a cultural hellhole. Though if you just want to bang airheads and eat sushi, I could see it being good.

EDIT-Well actually, all of the Bay Area is pretty sweet, though the lameness of the bars actually closing at 2 (and throwing you out at 1.45) kinda kills the point of making shitloads of disposable income

False.

California is amazing. Once you get a taste of our weather, you'll never want to leave.

Yea, I forgot, the OC and Chino and the eternally hellish suburb that is LA are just awesome...I mean really, LA is just like a big New Jersey WITHOUT NYC or Philly

San Diego is...ok but boring...

And I've gotten a taste for your weather...nice, but outside of the Bay Area, the preponderance of rhinestones and Ed Hardy make the West Coast intolerable (well, Portland is awesomely weird)

That said, SoCal does utterly suck.

I know a place
Where the grass is really greener
Warm, wet and wild
There must be somethin' in the water
Sippin' gin and juice
Layin' underneath the palm trees
The boys
Break their necks
Try'na creep a little sneak peek

You could travel the world
But nothing comes close
To the Golden Coast
Once you party with us
You'll be falling in love

I was really disappointed that this was Katy Perry's response to Empire State of Mind. Way to lose the argument for us, Katy..

The NorCal/SoCal debate is pretty endless, but it's a valid point that culturally they're like 2 completely different states, divided somewhere near Santa Cruz.

ITT people who have never lived in CA bitch about it.

Seriously. Ask someone who has lived for more than a few months in CA. See what their response is.
