Questions about deferment from UIUC. Please help.

Hi I have been accepted and put my deposits down for Illinois for this upcoming semester. However, my father has to travel overseas to take care of an ill family member and I have to help run the family business. We do not know how long he will be gone and I can not guarantee that I will make it for the fall but I know he will be back for the winter/spring semester.

I know I need to call the school and let them know about the deferment, however, what kind of information should I share with them?

If my dad is back in time, can I regain my seat for this semester? Will I be eligible for my merit aid, or an increase if I do defer? Also, can I defer for one semester and begin in the winter?

I want to let them know as soon as possible because I have a merit aid award and if possible let them give it to another student who needs it.

Any response will be helpful, thank you in advance.

I'm pretty sure only the admissions office at UIUC would be able to answer your questions. Good luck, though.

+1. I doubt you could regain your seat as they will give it to someone on the WL when you defer. No one else can run the business? No trusted manager that could handle the day to day?

No, if someone could, I wouldn't forgo my opportunity. Thanks for the reply.

Any one else with any input? I am going to call today and I don't want to burn any bridges or misrepresent myself?

From what I've heard, schools generally won't let you defer your merit aid offer. But it can't hurt to ask them if they'd make an exception for you. It's also highly unlikely they'll let you start in the Spring.

If I defer can I reapply for merit aid?

I wish they would let me in spring but I don't think so either.

Thank you for the reply.
