Summer Logistics

Excuse me if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it using the search function.
I've been wondering about this for a while, but how exactly do summer internships work, logistically? Say you go to Cornell, and you have an apartment in Ithaca, or you go to Mich and have an apartment in Ann Arbor (and you're not in university housing because of a significant other), but you have a summer placement in NYC or Chicago or San Fran for 10-12 weeks or whatever. Do you keep paying rent in Ithaca/Ann Arbor and find a place in NYC/Wherever? Do you have to move, then move back each summer? Is it even possible to find a place to stay in NYC for such a short period of time? I mean, this goes for anywhere, though I imagine that schools in bigger cities make it easier to get 1L/2L internships in your school's city.
Apologies for 0L ignorance.
