Top Law Schools

I see a lot of people talking about spending a lot of time in the library.

Is this because of the access to materials for study purposes, or just because it's a convenient place to study?

I ask because I won't be living super close to school, and would prefer to study at home.

The people I knew that studied at school (libaray or study rooms) did so becuase they said they could not study at home. I was the opposite, i studied at home only becuase I had a bad habit of chating with people at school instea dof studying. 99% of the time anything you need you can get onlibe or through the LS libray website, so studying at school/libray is just a prefreance. If your self motivated and a good manager of your time studying at home is fine.

For me, it was definitely all about forcing myself to do work. Although schlepping materials back and forth from home to school would've also sucked.

My commute is going to be like 60-90 minutes one way. I'm assuming my classes will get out early - mid afternoon, and would prefer to get home and do my work there.

If I don't leave before 3:45 or 4:00 in the afternoon, I might as well just stay to 6:30 or 7:00.

I just didn't know if I needed access to all the books and such or not.

My school had all the hornbooks and study aids for 1L classes on reserve in the library (the casebook-keyed hornbooks, E&Es, nutshells, "understanding" series, etc.). They could only be checked out for 2 hours at a time (renewable), or overnight if you checked them out less than two hours before closing.

So I can understand why people might have wanted to spend some time at the library every once and awhile to avoid buying expensive and potentially useless supplements. But I did most of my studying at home, as well. I did not find supplements useful.

PS -- Also check the reserve list at your school before you buy 2L and 3L books. I saved a couple hundred bucks 'cause my upper-level course profs put the texts on reserve in the library.

Studying at the library was entirely about getting work done on campus/convenient place to study as far as I could tell. On occasion someone would be using an actual library book, but most of the time people were using their laptops or personal copies of casebook/supplement.

Well there is also a herd mentality in law school, especially first semester of first year. people see other people studying in the library and think OMG if I don't study in the library and use multicolored highlighters till 12AM I'm going to be last in my class! No shiting, if I could have gotten 10 of my friends to stand on their hands in the library for an hour with the case book under their heads the first week of law school within seven days there would be another 10 people doing for no other reason than we were doing it and they thought we knew something they didn't. Study where and the way you think it will be most productive for you.

Aslo people go batshit crazy at the law school with in 3 weeks of exams, you can feel the stress, being there during readying week just frweaked me out so i stayed as far away from school as I could once classes were done until exam day.

The herd mentality comment is definitely credited to a degree, but it's also important not to mistake correlation for causation. People also tend to study in the library, rather than home, b/c it's way easier to stay in one spot for 3, 4, or 5 hours at a time. Home's got TV, food, dogs, phones, bills to pay, easy access to the outdoors, computer speakers, and 15 million other things to distract. I don't waste time when I'm in the library b/c I want to get the hell out of there.

That said, each person doing what's best for him/her is both (kinda) obvious and TCR.

Meh, I much, much prefer home, and I'm also much more productive there. i set up a home office and was pretty good at when I was in my office was study time only. Plus I could take a break without worry about my laptop being unattended in the library. I could smoke, cuss, fart, drink, sit around in my bathrobe, play music if I wanted to. I still prefer that. hell I've turned down some pretty good legal jobs to be bale to work out of my house instead. I have a suit top, shirt anf tie, becuase that's all you can see on the web cam, but I have no idea where the trousers are for any of my suits Maybe I'm just hermit, but I like staying in my cave and so long as I'm productive, it works for me.

Is 3D porn any good? I think it sounds like a brilliant idea and it will be the real reason people get 3D tvs, but have never known anyone who watched it.

To each his own, I suppose, but I'm the exact same way. Never, ever studied in the library in undergrad. I definitely ended up there occasionally, but I'm far too antsy for it to really work out for me. I study best when I'm able to get up, have food/drinks, use the bathroom, walk around, etc. The library feels a bit like a prison to me, in that regard. I'm good for like 30 minutes to an hour at a time before I need something, anything, to break the monotony of staring at my computer or a book for a couple of minutes. I also really like staying in my PJs whenever possible. If I could spend my entire life in PJs, I'd be a very happy girl.

I do have to admit that with my apartment's paper thin walls and the special time constraints involved, the library was a godsend for taking LSAT preptests last year...

Sorry to revive this thread and force it back on topic, but I'm looking for additional ideas on places people have gone for peaceful study.

On Saturdays I would like to wake up early (7ish) and study for a full day. Most PT law students have told me they require at least 1 full (8hour) weekend day to get caught up on reading and outlines for the week.

The problem is, building on what I am reading above I would like to avoid the LS library. I have a public library about half a mile away from my house, but I looked into it today and it is only open from 10a-5p on Saturdays. My house is not a great option because we have 2 young kids and my wife and I both agree I'll be more productive and be able to spend time with the family sooner if I leave the house to study.

So, any outside the box ideas on how/where people have studied while avoiding the law school library?

That was clever, but I wasn't looking for street adresses of a place to read, just some general ideas.
