Top Law Schools

Hi everyone. Just a quick note-- I'm meeting with my state's Lt. Gov. tomorrow, along with my town's mayor. (I work in a related field.) Does anyone have any advice for networking? I don't know if I want to go to into politics but I'm not about to swear anything off 100%. This person went to law school in DC (not the best, not the worst). I'm applying to this LS but it's not a top choice for me at the moment.

Edit: Just found out this person also used to teach law at another school I am considering, what are the odds...

This is where having normal social skills comes into play. Try to find out as much as you can about this person. Sports, interests, whatever and try to relate. Just talk normally. Dont try to sound extremely smart by using big spelling bee words because then you just come off sounding like a prick. If you want to bring up the whole you going to his alma mater subject just say "So you went to XXX Law school? Thats great! Im in the process of applying there". Youse might get into a conversation about the school and what you can expect or whatever. Just tell him what you want to do, including politics, and things should fall into place. Most of all, be confident. Straight up ask him to keep in touch. Say "It'd be great if we could stay in touch. Can I get your email address?". If the entire conversation went well then he should be more than happy to stay in touch and help you out.

Depends on the nature of the conversation. I've met a lot of higher up politicians in my state and nationally. and sometimes you make great conversation, and other times they just aren't interested.

Your best bet is to introduce yourself with a firm handshake, ask them a little about themselves, show that you are competent, and hopefully he'll take interest in you and ask some questions.

I figured as much but wasn't sure if I should bring a resume, etc. It's still lightyears to my legal employment (hopefully there is such a thing) and still a while until the application process. I probably would bring a resume or two just to have (if asked), but I have three major things to add and there's no way I can do it by tomorrow :/

I really hate to burst your bubble, but this isn't going to lead to a job. Bringing a resume would come off as gunnerish and presumptuous. Just make small talk, tell them your plans for law school, and see what they say. Maybe you'll land a business card or something, or maybe they'll have some campaign activities or something. Try to find a way to stay in contact with this person, but don't give them a resume. Bad idea.

Seriously, what does a Lt. Governor even do? I mean, this position has to be even more worthless than the VPOTUS.

And as FDR's VP once said, the VP job wasn't "worth a pitcher of warm piss." So it is hard to say what a Lt. Gov's job is worth. A Mason jar of cat shit?

I wasn't going to present a resume but I figure it never hurts to have one on hand just in case. Even if the Lt. Gov. didn't ask maybe some other person would. Or maybe they'd offer to do something for me other than a job. I know it wouldn't lead to a job as I still have a few years ahead of me and by then my resume will change (hopefully improve!). [In case it's not clear... I'm not bringing one.]

The business card suggestion is about what I was looking for. It didn't occur to me to ask for something as simple as a card, but it'd be good to have as a future reference.


And I'm not 100% sure what the Lt. Gov. does as my state was one of the few that never had one until this year. This person is also Secretary of State for my state whatever that's worth. And the spouse is a Superior Court Judge. I figure no matter what this is a good person to know.
