Hi i'm a junior planning to go to law school (class of '14)

If i were to move about 6-8 hours away to a place with bad winters. When (realistically) would i be able to visit home?

I would think once or twice a semester if you go early. Once November (mid-march in the spring) stay put. You'll need to study.
Breaks are up to you!

I live in the suburbs of NYC and i'm looking at U Buffalo or U Maine. Its about 6-8 hours to return home. Both locations are known for notoriously bad weather. I stayed home for my undergrad and now I'm looking to finally get my life going.

I dont plan on going home more than once a semester outside of thanksgiving or any other extended break, and this is based on attending school 1.5 hours from home.

However, if your personality dictates you may be able to make time for more frequent visits. A drive home friday night = going out on a friday night and getting wasted. If you keep up with what you need to do over the weekend, you could possible make it work. My caution would be that you would be exhausted after 12-16 hours of driving within 48 hours.... whereas if you stayed at school and spend a weekend relaxing you would be ready for a full week of work.

Also, you mention that you are in undergrad, and it is likely that by the time you finish college, graduate, and prepare for law school, you will have a different perspective on spending time at home.

So to do so, you want to figure out how much time you can spend with Mom and Dad? I love my parents and enjoy hanging around home once in awhile but...your question confuses me.

My goal in asking the question was to get a realistic view of the possibility of coming home once in a while.

I'm sure you can get as home as much as the weather permits!

I don't think anyone is going to be able to give you an answer--if you can drive well in the snow and the conditions allow it, you'll be fine to go back whenever.

+1 to Matlock. Anyway, for me, I was able to drive to see family about once every 2-3 months and I go to school about 5-6 hours away. Wanted my mom to see her grandaughter as much as possible but that was the MAX. and it did put me way behind most of the time tbh. It was worth it though.
