are pt students ranked among the entire class, including ft? or are they ranked only with their own section since they have a different course load?

Each school might do things differently, but I think most rank the PT class with the FT class that starts the year after them. So the PT class that starts Fall 2010 would be ranked with the FT class that starts Fall 2011, since they will graduate the same year (2013).

hmm i never thought of it that way, although it does make sense. So if schools do rank in this manner, how does this effect the chances of transferring or employment after their part-time 1L since I'd imagine class rank plays a large role in these decisions?

I think it's harder for PTers to get jobs during the summer after 1L year because they haven't finished the core curriculum, which is usually completed 1st semester of their 2L year. But I don't think it's impossible, just harder. (The summer after their 2L year is more equivalent to their 1L summer.)
