University of Chicago's prestige

How prestigious is the University of Chicago? Is it up there with Harvard and Yale? I know some may think this is a silly question, but when I was applying to college six years ago, I had never heard of Chicago.

Now I'm thinking of attending their law school. I'm not a prestige whore by any means, but I've always wondered how prestigious it is compared to Yale, Stanford and Harvard.

Is that better or worse than being a directional school?

It's prestigious among academics and people who have actually heard of it. Not a lot of lay prestige, though.

I heard a guy on the radio the other day claim that Obama used to teach law at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His air-mates all went "ohhhhh yea...UIC...good law school." I found this all quite humorous.

However, among academics it seems to hold a lot of weight as an institution.

the phrase "lay prestige" hurts my brain - just one of the many bits of idiocy that are chipping away my faith in humanity

It's lay prestige is all over the place (though I'd imagine it's better in the midwest than where I live now). I've had people ask if it was an online school, and I've had people say "Holy shit, that's a great school!" It's definitely nowhere near HYS to your average person, but lay prestige should be very low on your list of important factors anyhow.

University of Illinois at Chicago is a fairly well known school in Chicago, but I don't think anyone on the coast has really heard about UIC

maybe it's "TTT"

The University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago are different schools. One is private, and the other is public.

Often those most lacking in sex appeal are least lacking in oral talent... Why you ask? Necessity.
