UT: $7K a year plus in-state tuition vs. full ride at Temple.

I'm from the northeast, and have no interest in practicing in Texas or anywhere in the southwest or south or really anywhere but the northeast. But Austin is pretty sweet.

I haven't visited Temple, but Philly seems highly livable.

Thoughts? Will my UT degree be portable enough to land a good job back in the northeast (NY/DC/Philly)? Is a Temple degree completely useless even if I end up wanting to stay in Philly?

Temple is great for Philadelphia, with some limited portability to NYC/DC. Not sure how much portability Texas has in the NE, but Tx is really good school for sure.

I'm sure similar statistics would apply for clerkships.

I'd definitely recommend visiting Temple before you decide. I really like Philly and think it would be great to live/work in/near it, but I wouldn't want to live/work at Temple. Even if you don't end up agreeing with me, I still think it's a smart idea to actually check out any school you're seriously considering.

Temple is in a part of Philly that some may consider to be "in transition". They have a lot of security officers there....

You should ask Texas how strong their alumni network is in the Northeast. They are, I think, the biggest law school in terms of total enrollment and I would think they would be able to connect you with alumni there.

On another note, if you do your summer work in the Northeast it will make it much easier to get a job there. I think when people say you build your networks in the region you go to school, that is assuming you do you summer work locally. If you go to DC/NYC/Philly to do your summer work you can build a network there.

With in-state tuition and 7k/year, I'd say UT. ~15% of each class gets jobs in the DC-NYC corridor each year. With your personal ties to that area, UT will give you much better opportunities.

I wouldn't recommend going to Temple unless you're 100% happy ultimately practicing in the Philly or tri-state area. It has a decent rep in Philly but doesn't hold much weight elsewhere.

UT is on the rise and I personally would take them over G-Town/Cornell (don't hate).

I was on --LinkRemoved-- the other day and I noticed that UT gets a lot of the top firms at OCI.

In this case, TITCR. With that much money the UT education will be cheap, and the degree is highly portable. Ties to northeast + UT degree = lots of possibilities.
