I am wondering if getting my recommendations from teachers outside of my major program is going to look funny. For example, if I am a math major and I get my recommendations from an english teacher and a physics professor, is that going to have a negative effect on my application?

That's perfectly fine as long as they can write more than he was a good student.

Yeah, if they know you well and can say good things, this is a great idea! It will only make you look more well rounded. As a math major, you might want to go with the English teacher, especially if he/she can comment on your writing ability.

What if they are recommendations from teachers I have only taken 1 or 2 class from? Would that look strange?

right on!

As an above poster said, it can make you look more well rounded.

I was a history major, but took a lot of social sciences type classes.

I ended up with 1 history, 1 englilsh and 1 geography rec.
I think it looks better, as long as they really know you/will write a good rec.

Not a problem at all. I was a political science major and my two recommenders were my sociology/women's studies professor and my italian/foreign language professor.

I dont know about making you look "well rounded", but it doesnt hurt. I actually never thought about the "well rounded" stuff. Although, from what I've gathered schools dont care all that much about recommendations.

Good luck.
