Part-time Law School

Post by kh86 » Mon Mar 08, 2010 1:44 pm

I am currently working full-time (40 hrs/week) in Houston at an engineering company and would ideally like to go to University of Houston part-time. However, I am concerned that the workload will not allow me to perform as well as I would like. I was wondering if there are part-time students out there that could comment on their own experiences. How difficult has it been to balance a full-time job and law school? Did working significantly affect your grades? Would it be better for me to quit my job and go to U of H full-time? Thanks.

It's pretty established that you shouldnt work during your first year. Law school will be your job.

students may find that part-time law programs better fit their budgets, both regarding cost and the ability to space out classes over more years. Of course the ability to work full time while taking courses is also an advantage for working professionals, especially parents, who can’t take time away from their jobs to pursue higher education

Hey HoustonLawyer,

I am thinking about going into patent law in Houston. Any idea on how the job prospects for this field are in Houston?

haha..well no law school for me now. I was accepted into UH's part-time law program with a scholarship but decided not to go. I'm glad I did. I decided to go the MBA route.

Law school isn't like high school or some colleges where the amount of grind you put in will correlate to grade. If you are a certain kind of smart, you'll do well. If you are not a certain kind of smart, you'll do okay at best. I was in a part time class where the top 5 students all worked full time jobs while the rest of the class, non workers, well, they didn't finish in the top 5. Get it? You'll be able to put in the amount of time to earn a B. Whether you make an A or not, well, that's not something you can fix. I'd say if you are worried about it that you are posting the question, you are in for a rough time. Normally the person who finishes top of the class wouldn't be too concerned about such things.
